How to Handle Several Hours in Traffic Jams

You are looking forward to your holiday, your suitcases are packed, your favourite playlist is ready, and suddenly the traffic comes to a complete stop. A traffic jam. And not for ten minutes, but possibly for several hours.

Long waits in traffic jams are often one of the most challenging parts of travelling by car. Fatigue, impatience, an overheated car and the feeling that the journey is not moving at all can quickly appear. The good news is that even several hours in traffic can be managed much more comfortably.

How to Handle Several Hours in Traffic Jams

Traffic jams are frustrating mainly because we have no control over them. The sooner we accept that, the less stressful the whole situation becomes.

Instead of constantly checking your navigation and nervously moving forward inch by inch, try focusing your energy on making the journey as pleasant as possible.

1. Accept That You Cannot Speed Up a Traffic Jam

Constantly recalculating your arrival time or nervously switching lanes usually solves nothing. On the contrary, it increases stress and fatigue.

Once you accept that some things are beyond your control, the journey immediately becomes much calmer.

2. Prepare an Emergency Car Kit

During longer traffic jams, you will appreciate not having to search for anything complicated.

  • enough water,
  • light snacks,
  • wet wipes,
  • a charger and power bank,
  • sunglasses,
  • a small pillow or blanket,
  • chewing gum or mint candies.

3. Create a Travel Playlist or Podcast List

Music, audiobooks or podcasts can make even several hours of waiting feel much shorter.

A long journey then feels less like wasted time and more like space for rest or inspiration.

4. Do Not Underestimate Air Conditioning and Hydration

During a long wait, the car is often overheated and the air becomes dry. Drink regularly and ventilate the car.

Even mild dehydration can contribute to a heavy-headed feeling and increased fatigue.

5. Create a Small Refreshment Ritual

When traffic has been standing still for a long time, it helps to slow down for a moment. If it is safe, get out of the car during a stop, stretch, take a short walk and give yourself a brief moment just for you.

Part of such a travel ritual can also be inhaled oxygen, which people use during active days or travelling as a short moment of refreshment.
