How to Cope with Hours in Traffic Jams

You're looking forward to your holiday, your bags are packed, your favourite playlist is ready, and suddenly the traffic comes to a complete standstill. A traffic jam. Not just for ten minutes, but potentially for several hours.

Spending hours stuck in traffic can be one of the most challenging parts of travelling by car. Tiredness, impatience, an overheated car and the feeling that you're getting nowhere can quickly take their toll. The good news is that even several hours in a traffic jam can be made much more comfortable and manageable.

How to Cope with Hours in Traffic Jams

Traffic jams are frustrating mainly because they are beyond our control. The sooner we accept that, the less stressful the whole experience can feel.

Instead of constantly checking your sat nav and getting frustrated as traffic inches forward, try focusing on making the journey as comfortable as possible.

1. Accept That You Cannot Make the Traffic Move Faster

Constantly recalculating your arrival time or impatiently switching lanes rarely makes a difference. In fact, it often adds to your stress and frustration.

Once you accept that some things are simply out of your hands, the journey can start to feel much calmer.

2. Prepare a Travel Essentials Kit for Your Car

When you're stuck in traffic for a long time, having everything you need within easy reach can make a real difference.

  • plenty of drinking water,
  • light snacks,
  • wet wipes,
  • a phone charger and power bank,
  • sunglasses,
  • a small pillow or blanket,
  • chewing gum or mint sweets.

3. Create a Road Trip Playlist or Choose a Podcast

Music, audiobooks and podcasts can make even several hours of waiting feel a little shorter.

Instead of feeling like wasted time, a long journey can become an opportunity to relax, discover something new or find a little inspiration.

4. Pay Attention to Air Conditioning and Hydration

During long delays, the inside of a car can become uncomfortably hot and the air may feel dry. Drink water regularly and keep the car comfortably ventilated or cooled.

Even mild dehydration can contribute to headaches, tiredness and a general feeling of discomfort.

5. Create a Little Refreshment Ritual

When traffic is moving slowly for hours, taking a proper break can make the experience more manageable. If you can safely reach a designated stopping area, get out of the car, stretch your legs, take a short walk and enjoy a moment to yourself. Never leave your vehicle in an active traffic lane.

You could also include inhalation oxygen as an optional part of your personal travel ritual. Some people enjoy it as a small moment of refreshment during busy days or while travelling. Always use it during a safe break, never while driving.

6. Always Put Safety First

If you're driving and start feeling tired, stop somewhere safe and take a proper break. No product can replace sleep, rest or a necessary safety stop. Never rely on inhalation oxygen to stay alert behind the wheel.

When using inhalation oxygen, always follow the instructions on the product packaging. Keep pressurised containers away from direct sunlight and excessive heat, and never leave them in an overheated car.
